FINALE --Chapter 22 --(Joe)
“Summer, let me help you.” I said trying to calm her as we quickly walked to my car.
“Surprise, boyfriend…my name is Autumn. Now move!” she said harshly to me as she pressed the gun into my back.
“Where are we going?” I said as I started the car.
“Away. We can’t stay here in New York.” She said with a smirk.
I looked into her eyes. It wasn’t the Summer I had known since the day I met her. She was different. It was like something had taken over her. I had to think fast. I had to get her help without her knowing I was trying to help. In my sociology class we learned that a person with this kind of mental illness will need to talk about their past. I had to get her somewhere so we could talk and I so I could calm her down. Or at least bring Summer back. I pulled out of the parking lot and looked over at her.
“Summ—“ I stopped and corrected myself. “Autumn, before we leave I need to get my things. I have to go back to my apartment. Please.”
She thought for a moment. “Fine. Just hurry up.”

“Dammit.” I whispered as I leaned over the young girl’s dead body.
I looked over at the car that the investigators had informed me was Summer Lovato’s car. I stood up and looked at Officer Pratt.
“What about the girl who was shot in the shoulder?”
“Paramedics said they think she’s going to survive.” he simply stated.
I shook my head in disappointment that no one got here to the school in time.
Officer Pratt continued, “Uhm…the dead girl's name is Arianna Grant. Summer Lovato’s cousin.” He paused and continued in a daze, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many dead bodies in my whole life.”
“Get used to it, Pratt.” I said nonchalantly.
“Detective Cyrus!” I heard someone call out to me.
I turned to see an officer walking with one of the college campus security guards.
“Mr. Johnnie here says he knows who Summer Lovato may be with.”
I turned my attention to the security guard awaiting his story.
“Yes, I saw them arguing right before the shooting happened. She was arguing with the victim and a student named, Joe Jonas. They drove away in a black mustang.”
“Do you know where they went?” I asked impatiently.
“No, but I saw what direction the car was going in. He went south on Main street.” he said pointing up the road.
I nodded to the security guard saying ‘thank you’ as I quickly walked away grabbing Officer Pratt’s arm. I then said to Officer Pratt, “I need an address, car tag number and any possible hangouts that this Joe Jonas would be known to hang out. Im heading down south on Main street to look for any black mustangs.” “Okay…But there could be thousands of black mustangs!” Officer Pratt yelled to me as I quickly ran to my car.
“But only one with Summer Lovato in it.” I yelled back at him.

I opened the door and slowly walked in. Summer walked closely behind me still aiming her gun at me. “Can I get you something to drink while I pack my things?” I asked her.
“No.” she answered as if it were a dumb question I had asked. “You just better hurry up and pack lover-boy.”
I watched her look around my apartment.
“Does this place look familiar to you?” I asked trying to stall.
“What?”
“You were with Shane, right? Didn’t you guys ever come back here?” I asked surfing for answers on the where abouts of my best friend Shane.
She smirked at me. “Oh that’s right. You two did share an apartment together. Its funny how I was on my way over to meet you when I bumped into Shane. So, where’s his room?”
I escorted her down the hall toward Shane’s room. I opened the door.
“This is it.”
Summer walked in. “Typical guy’s room.” She stated.
“You said you were on your way to meet me, but saw Shane instead. So…where’s Shane now?” I enquired. She snapped her head to look back in my direction. “What? Summer didn’t tell you?”
I shook my head no.
She giggled. “I killed him.”
“What?” I asked confused with a shocked tone.
She smirked. “That’s right. I killed him. Right after I fucked him.”
I paused and stared at her. I was hoping she was joking.
“Summer, you really didn’t –“
“HEY!! My name is fucking Autumn! Got it!?” she snapped at me.
It was clear to me that she really was mentally ill.
“You killed him?”
“Im not kidding, honey. I really did. And guess what? Summer helped me chop him up in itty, bitty, bitty pieces.” She smiled as her voice raised to a high pitch.
I could feel myself getting angry with her. I looked down at the gun to her side. My eyes raised back up to the eyes that were of a murderer.
“Why? Why, Autumn?”
“Because he wanted me to.”
“What?”
“That’s what im here for. Every man wants nothing but sex. Just like my stepfather.” She began speaking thru her teeth as she reminisced about her past. “He raped me…over and over..and over. I was only 11 years old. He told me I was put on this earth for every man’s needs and wants. Shane needed sex…and he wanted me. I killed my step father….a long with every man who needed and wanted me.”
A tear rolled down my face when she told me her troubled past. The thought of Shane being dead rung in my head which brought me to sadness. I couldn’t believe my best friend who was like a brother to me was now dead.
“Where was Summer when this happened to you?”
She furrowed her eyebrows and gave me a puzzled look. “What?”
“Where was Summer when all of this happened to you with your step father?"
“She panicked…” She finally said after a long pause. “…like she always does. But that was one thing she couldn’t clean up. No matter what. But I gave her plenty of chances to clean up the mess. Whenever I killed a guy, she helped me to clean it up. She did her job. She helped. She helped me.” She started to sob.
I walked up close to her to comfort her, but she quickly backed away.
“Did you fuck Summer?” she asked with a frown after gathering herself together to stop crying.
I wasn’t sure how to respond after hearing about her past. As I stood there thinking, I realized that I may have had sex with her 'Autumn' personality that night we were intimate. I knew she wasn’t a virgin. Then I wondered why after having sex had she not killed me.
“Summer and I made love.” I hesitated.
“You love her?” she asked with a surprised expression.
Was I in love? I knew I really liked her.
“The connection that Summer and I had was very intimate, and I wouldn’t change it for the world.”
She started to tear up. She then asked with sadness, “Do you think you could ever feel that way about me?”
I slowly approached her with caution. She looked so vulnerable. This may be my moment to bring Summer back.
“You are a beautiful person inside and out. I care so much about Summer and you as her sister.” I said softly as I softly wiped a tear from her eye.
I slowly attempted to take off her eye glasses. She began to sob. Her glasses were now off. She closed her eyes.
“Summer…” I whispered. “Come back to me. “ I softly kissed the corners of her lips.
She pulled away and walked out of Shane’s room back into the living room. I pulled her arm to stop her. “Summer?”
“I can’t do this anymore.” She sobbed. “Im sorry. I just wanted someone to love us. That’s all.” She raised the gun in her hand and aimed it at me.
Just as I raised my hands in defense, my front door burst opened.
“FREEZE!!! PUT THE GUN DOWN, SUMMER!!” yelled a female wearing black with a police badge hanging on her belt and a gun in her hand aiming it at Summer.
Summer froze in her stance not even looking back at the police officer who was now in my apartment. Summer kept her eyes on me.
“Im sorry, Joe.” She whispered as the tears rolled down her face.
“SUMMER, PUT THE GUN DOWN NOW!” the police yelled at her once again.
“Do you love me, Joe?” she pleaded with tears in her eyes.
It was like the Summer I knew had come back. I could see it in her eyes. I thought for a moment as I felt so bad for her. I wanted her to get help. She was so beautiful and she was clearly crying out for help. Within the next instant, I realized I really do care for this girl. I do love her.
“Summer…I love you. I do…Just let me help you.”
She began to cry hysterically as she continued to aim the gun at me. She then moved directly in front of me with her back to the officer. As if making it hard for the officer to shoot her, because if she did, it was clear that I would get shot too if the bullet went right thru her.
“Summer…please…put the gun down.” The police softly said to her still aiming her gun at Summer as she slowly walked inside my apartment.
“Im sorry.” She whispered to me thru her tears.
Before I knew it, Summer pointed the gun at her own temple and quickly pulled the trigger.
BANG!
“NOOOO!” I yelled as her body quickly slumped to the ground with the force of her own bullet to her head.
Blood splattered onto my face as I watched her go down in what seemed like slow motion to me. I dropped to the ground grabbing Summer’s hand and placing it against my forehead. “I could have helped you. Why didn’t you let me help you.” I said quietly with anger as tears streamed down my face.
I could hear the female police officer speak into her phone with a very sad and disappointed tone. “Yeah…This is Detective Cyrus…suspect just committed suicide…” her voice trailed off.
I soon heard police sirens near my apartment building approaching. Usually the sounds of sirens outside my window would not phase me…but this time, it was different. I knew it was coming for what had just happened in my apartment.
My head hung low as I held Summer’s hand inside of my hand. Tears flowed down my face uncontrollably. I felt a hand tenderly touch my shoulder. It was the detective. She didn’t need to say anything. I didn’t have to know her. But at that moment, I needed the comfort from someone.
We hugged.
I collapsed in her arms. She brought me to my sofa, away from Summer’s dead body, as she kept her arms around me. The thoughts of Summer’s life ran thru my head. The thought of losing my best friend Shane ran thru my head. I then thought of Selena. I raised my head and looked at the detective.
“My friend Selena…Selena Romez. She was shot in the parking lot at N.Y.U…in the shoulder. Is she okay?” She looked at me with hopeful eyes. “She’s going to make it. She’s okay.”
At that moment paramedics and police officers made their way into my apartment. We briefly watched them work and then the detective spoke briefly with another officer whom I heard her call him by the name of Pratt. She then came back to me wrapping her arms around my shoulders.
“Come on. Let’s get you out of here. I’ll take you to see your friend Selena.”
I nodded okay.
“No.” she answered as if it were a dumb question I had asked. “You just better hurry up and pack lover-boy.”
