Chapter 5 ~ Year 1995
Sabrina (Age 12-13) & Taylor (Age 12-13)
“Sabrina! Are you doing your homework?” Mr. Cain yelled on the other side of Sabrina’s bedroom door.
“Yes!” Sabrina lied as she continued to talk on the phone with her best friend Taylor.
“Where’s your mom?” Taylor asked as she popped her lips after applying her cherry lipgloss.
“She had to go back to the store because she picked up the skim milk instead of the 2% milk. I told her no one likes that crappy skim milk! Ugh.” Sabrina said with annoyance as she held the phone against her ear while braiding a section of her long dark hair.
“Oh my God…like seriously? Your mother is just like my mother…I swear!” Taylor said turning up her radio as the song ‘I Only Wanna Be With You’ by the group Hootie and the Blowfish played out loud. She started to prance around her room tossing her blonde curly hair.
“I know! Totally.” Sabrina then heard the song Taylor was playing in the background. “Is that Hootie? Turn that up, I love that song! Are you watching MTV?”
“Nope! It’s the radio.” Taylor began giggling. She started imitating the voice of a radio DJ. “This is DJ Taylor Swift, and I would like to dedicate this song to Nicholas Jerry Lancaster. You are so freaking cute!” she laughed thinking of Nick in awe.
Sabrina laughed, however felt slightly awkward knowing that Taylor had grown a major crush on their friend Nicholas. “Hey isn’t he in like every single one of your classes this year?”
“Yep! That’s why I looove seventh grade! Junior High is awesome!” Taylor gleamed with excitement.
“Totally.” Sabrina said softly thinking about Nicholas and Taylor as a couple. She didn’t really think they made a cute couple.
“You know who I think you should hook up with?” Taylor smiled. Sabrina remained quiet wondering whose name she would say. “I think you and that boy Zack should get together? You know Victoria, right? She’s throwing a party this weekend. We should totally go. You can hook up with Zack, and me and Nick can totally hook up! Deal?”
“Hook up? What do you mean?” Sabrina asked confused.
“Oh my God, Brin. Don’t be such a virgin. I mean... like kiss and stuff. Don’t you think Zack is cute?”
“Uhm...yea he’s cute and all…but I don’t know if I can go to Victoria's party. Besides, I thought it was a slumber party for girls only. Why would Zack or Nicholas be there?”
“Did you really think Victoria wasn’t going to have her new boyfriend, David, over there? C’mon, Sabrina... We’re trying to be popular remember? You’re going to have to have a boyfriend soon. And I’m working on Nicholas. I heard he made the football team too, right?” Taylor said while twirling her blonde hair between her fingers.
“Yeah…he told me earlier today. He said his dad was going to take him out this weekend to celebrate.” At that moment, Sabrina heard a beeping noise notifying her there was another incoming call. “Taylor, hold on.” Sabrina pressed a button to click over to the other call.
“Hello?”
“Hi, this is nurse Eliza Banks calling from Atlanta Medical Center. May I please speak with a Mr. Dean Cain, please?”
“Hold please.” Sabrina spoke into the phone. She then clicked back over to Taylor’s line. “Hey, Im going to have to call you back. It’s for my dad.” Sabrina said annoyed and rolling her eyes as she raised from her bed to tell her dad there was someone on the phone for him.
“Ah, bummer! Well, hey, wanna skip school tomorrow?”
“Nah, I can’t. I have a test in art class.” Sabrina said walking slowly toward her parent’s room where her father would be.
“What the hell? How the hell do you have a test in art class?” Taylor laughed.
Sabrina laughed with her. "I know it’s weird. But I have to take it. If I don’t call you back tonight, I will talk to you tomorrow.”
Taylor agreed and they both ended their call.
Sabrina walked up to her father and handed him the telephone. “Telephone.”
Dean took the phone from Sabrina realizing someone was on the line for him even though he didn’t hear the phone ring. “Sabrina, were you on the phone with Taylor again?”
Sabrina nodded yes.
“Taylor has changed. What did your mother and I say about hanging out with her so much.”
“Oh my gosh! We talked for like 2 minutes!” Sabrina lied as she rolled her eyes with an attitude. She then walked away so she wouldn’t hear another word from him. Sabrina closed her bedroom door and plopped down on her bed. She thought about the words her friend Taylor said about Nicholas. She looked over out her window to see if Nicholas' bedroom light was on or not. His light was off. That meant he was either sleep or not in his room. She began to wonder how Nicholas felt about Taylor. Would he like her back?
Sabrina’s parents no longer approved of her long time best friend Taylor. The summer before their 6th grade year, Taylor spent her summer away at a relative’s house because she had become a troublesome for her parents. However, it was turning for the worst. When she returned home, her attitude was totally different and even worse than before. Sabrina could admit that she was definitely not the sweet little Taylor she remembered the very first day of kindergarten she had met her. But Sabrina still considered Taylor as her best friend.
Seconds later, Sabrina;s thoughts were interrupted when she heard her father open her door. He had tears in his eyes. “We have to go. Get dressed.” He said firmly.
“What’s wrong?” Sabrina asked with concern.
“I’ll tell you in the car. Put some clothes on.”
Sabrina rushed to throw some jeans on over her pajama shorts slightly frightened by her father’s tone. Moments later she was sitting in the passenger seat next to her father as he quickly drove to a destination in mind. “Daddy what’s wrong?” Sabrina asked once again worried to see her father shed a tear.
“Your mother…she’s been in an accident. She’s in the hospital.”
Once they arrived to the hospital, the doctor and nurses filled them in on the news about Sabrina’s mother.
“Im so sorry. We did everything we could. Your wife, Teri Cain, was hit by a drunk driver head on. She lost a lot of blood internally and there was nothing we could do. Im so sorry for your loss.”
Sabrina’s father held her tightly at hearing the news. Sabrina was so in shock she didn’t know if she should cry or scream out in anger. Sabrina looked up at her father. His face was red with fury and sadness. She could tell he was trying to hold back his tears to be strong in front of her. Sabrina looked up at her father. “Wait…she’s gone? She’s gone…forever?” Sabrina asked with confusion as her voice started to crack. It was like she was finally coming to the realization that her mother had just passed away. “Daddy? Mom’s gone?”
Dean nodded yes with grief in his eyes. He pulled Sabrina into his arms as he began to slowly rock her back and forth with his eyes filled with tears.
“No…no! Daddy, nooooo!” Sabrina sobbed loudly as tears began to flow down her face.
---------
Days later on the day of her mother’s funeral, Sabrina’s house was full of people to pay their respects toward the loss of Teri Cain. People were dressed in black as they came from visiting the grave site. Sabrina’s father wasn’t doing well at all. Sabrina sat in silence on the sofa watching a lot of people come in and out of the house. Majority of them she had no idea who they were. Her aunt Kelly sat down beside her and wrapped her arm around Sabrina’s shoulders.
“Hey mami. How are you holding up?” she said in a comforting tone.
“Okay, I guess.” Sabrina responded sadly looking down.
“You know, you really need to eat something.” Kelly added.
“Im not hungry.”
Kelly sighed and gently pushed Sabrina’s hair behind her shoulder so she could see her full profile. “Aww, sweetie. I know. But for me…please eat something. How about if I grab you some finger sandwiches? Will you at least try to eat that?”
Sabrina hesitated. After several seconds of silence between the two, Sabrina agreed.
Kelly patted Sabrina’s leg saying, “Good. I will be right back.” Kelly rose to her feet to fix Sabrina a small plate.
Sabrina looked up to see Sandra Lancaster, Nicholas’ mother speaking to her father. She could tell that she was deeply sorry for the family’s loss. Sabrina’s expression lighten up a bit when she saw Mrs. Lancaster because this let her know that Nicholas was somewhere around. Before Sabrina knew it, she felt the presence of someone sitting next to her. It was Nicholas.
“Hey.” Nicholas greeted her in a soft tone. He wore black slacks with a black shirt and a blue and black checkered designed tie. Sabrina only gave him a brief smile acknowledging his presence. “Im sorry about your mom. Are you okay?”
Sabrina nodded yes giving Nicholas a light smile.
“Well…Im here for you…if.. you feel like talking...and stuff...or anything.” He continued nervously not sure what to say. He placed his hand on her shoulder and gave it a light squeeze.
“Thanks, Nicholas.” Sabrina said pushing a few strands of her hair behind her ears.
Nicholas smiled at her and then awkwardly removed his hand from her shoulder. He began looking around at the many faces in Sabrina’s living room. He then asked, “Where’s Taylor? Did she come already?”
Sabrina’s mood suddenly went glum again. ‘Why was he looking for Taylor? I guess he really does like Taylor,’ Sabrina thought. She cleared her throat and responded, “Yeah. Her and both of her parents came and left.
At that moment, Sabrina’s aunt, Kelly, walked back toward her handing her a plate of a few finger sandwiches. She looked at Nicholas sitting beside her niece. “Hi, Nicholas. So good to see you again.”
“Thanks.” Nicholas said with a warm smile.
“Listen, why don’t you guys go upstairs. Get some of this stuff off your mind. Right, Nicholas? How about it?” Kelly said trying to get Sabrina to cheer up.
“Yep. Sounds good to me.” Nicholas smiled. He stood up and held his hand out for Sabrina to grab his hand.
Sabrina reluctantly agreed and took Nicholas’s hand walking upstairs.
They sat in her bedroom watching their new favorite cartoon, ‘Ren & Stimpy’. Sabrina was happy to have him by her side. Unfortunately, their bonding moment would not last much longer.

Chapter 6 ~ Year 1996
Nick (Age 13)
Several months later with a week left of school before the summer school break came, Sabrina had her first birthday without her mother. It was a sad 13th birthday, but her and her father continued to live life as normal. Even though Sabrina felt her father was no longer the same man he used to be. He became very distant and started to work a lot after losing his loving partner and wife, Teri. He felt he needed something to keep him busy, therefore he constantly worked.
On a Friday afternoon, Nicholas dropped by Sabrina’s house while her father was still at work.
“So you’re not scared that your dad has to leave you by yourself at home since he has to work?” Nicholas asked once Sabrina allowed him to come inside her house.
“Nah, Im used to it. Want a grilled cheese sandwich?” Sabrina asked as she quickly turned toward the stove swinging her long ponytail behind her.
“Yeah sure. Thanks.” Nicholas said as he sat down at kitchen table.
“Cool. Taylor said her mom is going to drop her off over here soon. She’s going to spend the weekend over here. That’s good news, right?” Sabrina said with a smirk considering the fact she knows Taylor likes him.
Throughout their 7th grade school year, Nicholas clearly realized how much Taylor liked him. However it got on his nerves because he didn’t like her in the same way at all. After hearing that Taylor was coming over, Nicholas rolled his eyes in annoyance.
“Yeah, good for you, I guess. I wont be staying long.”
“Why not? Taylor will be happy you’re here.”
“Yeah, well that’s too bad.”
Sabrina laughed. “She said that next year she’s going to try out for the cheerleading team just so she can make sure to see you play at every football game.” Sabrina teased him.
“Great.” Nicholas stated unenthused.
Sabrina continued to make grilled cheese sandwiches when she asked, “What? You don’t like Taylor like that? She said you guys were getting closer and closer.”
“Nah, that’s not true. Taylor’s changed. She wears too much makeup. Besides…I wont be here next year in eighth grade.” Nicholas stately slowly.
Sabrina turned around to face Nicholas. “What do you mean?”
Nicholas cleared his throat. “My parents are getting a divorce. My dad is moving out…and Im leaving with him.”
“What! Where?”
“Washington D.C.”
“What!” Sabrina said shocked with sadness. “You can’t leave. You’re just going to leave your mother like that?”
“She’ll be fine. She's moving too, but within the city. She said she wont stay in that house anymore because of too many memories. Besides ...she wasn’t there for my dad. My dad needed her and she just wasn’t there for him.”
“You don’t know that –“
“I do know that!” Nicholas quickly said defending his father.
Sabrina slowly turned back around to take the grilled cheese sandwiches off the stove and turned the stove off. She couldn’t believe her best friend was leaving her.
“My mother might as well be dead to us.” Nicholas said out loud in deep thoughts.
Sabrina turned around in rage that he would say something like that considering that her mother was actually deceased. “Don’t say that! Your mother is alive! You should never say something so stupid like that! You should be happy she’s still alive! You don’t know what you have until she’s missing! So take that back!!”
Nicholas looked up at Sabrina in shock of her outrage. He could see she was on the verge of tears. “Okay, Im sorry. Chill out.” Nicholas realized she was thinking about her mother. “Im sorry, Bri-bear.” Nicholas teased to make her smile.
“Shut up, don’t call me that.” Sabrina frowned but slowly allowed a smile to spread across her face.
Nicholas smiled and got up from his chair. “C’mon, let’s hug it out.” He said wrapping his arms around her giving her a huge teddy-bear-like hug.
Sabrina smiled and embraced his hug.
This was their first body to body contact they had ever had since they have known each other. Nicholas enjoyed having this contact with Sabrina. He made sure to press his chest against hers since he felt that she was now developing nicely in her chest area.
“Im going to miss you, Nicholas.” Sabrina said softly as they still embraced each other.
“Im going to miss you too, Bri-bear. And call me Nick.”
They slightly pulled away from each other’s embrace, however they remained standing close to each other. Sabrina smiled, “But I like calling you Nicholas.” She began to giggle.
Sabrina suddenly quickly stopped giggling when Nicholas awkwardly leaned into her and pressed his lips against her lips. Sabrina was caught by surprise as she kept her eyes open looking at Nicholas who had his eyes closed. He then pulled away and looked away awkwardly. Sabrina touched her lips with her fingers still in shock that Nicholas kissed her. ‘Was that my first official kiss?’ Sabrina thought. “What…what did you do that for?” Sabrina asked him.
“I dunno. I just…wanted to. Are you mad?” Nick asked uncertain of the situation.
Sabrina hesitated. “Uhm…no. But…but what about Taylor.”
Nick smacked his teeth. “I don’t like Taylor.”
“Oh.” Sabrina said not sure what else to say.
They stood there awkwardly in silence. Nick finally made eye contact again with Sabrina. “Uhm…can I kiss you…again?”
Sabrina nodded yes.
She had to admit, she liked it. And if this was the last time she would get to spend time with him...Then so be it.
Once Sabrina approved him to kiss her again, Nick awkwardly placed his hands on her waist as Sabrina placed her hands on his shoulders. They tilted their heads to the side and once again pressed their lips against each other. Five seconds later, the doorbell rung making them jump apart from each other startled.
Sabrina rushed to the door while Nick rushed to sit back down at the kitchen table. Sabrina answered the door to see Taylor standing on the other side. “Bye mom!” Taylor yelled waving her mom off. She turned back around to Sabrina rolling her eyes. “She is so fucking annoying.” She then smiled giving her friend a hug. “Hi honey! How are you this fine evening! We are going to have a blast!”
Sabrina smiled with joy returning the hug. She allowed Taylor inside when Taylor stopped in her tracks and turned around to face Sabrina once again. “Why didn’t you tell me Nick was going to be here?” She began primping her hair as if Nick couldn’t see her. “How do I look? Am I cute?”
Sabrina smiled. “You look great.”
Taylor turned around and smiled at Nick. “Hey good looking.”
Nick gave her a light smile and waved back to her. It was obvious that he was disappointed that he and Sabrina were interrupted. Sabrina pushed a few strands up into her ponytail trying to get the thought of her and Nicholas kissing out of her head. She still couldn’t believe they actually kissed. She wondered what it meant. Did it mean that he liked her?
For the next few minutes, Sabrina would watch Taylor and Nick converse as she ate her grilled cheese sandwich. She would catch Nick staring at her at times whenever Taylor wasn’t paying any attention.
Taylor suddenly gasped with excitement. “Sabrina! You know what you should do?! You should totally ask Zack to come over.”
“For what?” Sabrina asked drinking her Sprite soda.
“For what?! You have the house to yourself for the next couple of hours. You should totally invite him over so we can have a small little party.” Taylor smiled as she pushed her chest out as if wanting Nick to notice her new found breasts.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea.” Nick said looking at Sabrina as if giving her a cautious look.
Sabrina noticed the look Nick had given her. “Yeah. Maybe Nicholas is right. Maybe that’s not a good idea. A small group could get out of hand and turn into a big group. Besides my dad will be here soon.”
Taylor snapped her head at Nick and saw that he was grinning. “Thanks a lot Nick, you made her change her mind.”
Nick’s grin slowly faded. “I should probably go. I have to finish packing.”
“Packing? Where are you going?” Taylor asked surprised.
“He’s moving. His parents are getting a divorce.” Sabrina answered for Nick.
“Yeah, Im moving to live with my dad.” Nick added.
Taylor stood up and wrapped her arms around Nick’s neck giving him a hug. “Oh my God! Im so going to miss you!” Nick looked over at Sabrina with a confused look. He looked as if he would rather be hugging Sabrina.
Taylor kissed his cheek. She then looked as if she were about to kiss his lips.
Sabrina got up from the table to place her plate in the kitchen sink not wanting to see them exchange any kisses. However, Nick gently pushed Taylor away so she wouldn’t kiss him anymore.
“I really have to go.” Nick said giving Taylor a sympathetic expression. He walked toward the door and gave Sabrina one last look. He waved goodbye to her and walked out the door.
Sabrina gave him a light smile. Little did she know, that was the last time she would see or talk to him before he moved away.
Things had changed for Sabrina over the summer and her eighth grade school year. It appeared that now she was hanging out more with Taylor, as they became the most popular girls in the whole school. Taylor even taught Sabrina how to wear makeup.
Something her mother never got the chance to do. Taylor shared a lot of things with Sabrina that her father would not have approved of if he had known. The girls couldn't wait to carry on their popularity to high school since majority of the kids they knew in junior high would be going to the same school; NorthSide High.
