Chapter 17 --(Summer)
I woke up looking up at my ceiling with a slight headache. I placed my hand over my forehead as I sat up in my bed. I was slightly startled when I saw my sister Autumn sitting on my bed staring back at me.
“Jesus! Autumn, what are you doing?”
“We have to leave now.” She said firmly.
“What?” I asked slightly confused as I ran my fingers thru my hair.
“You were right. We should leave like now. Not later, not tomorrow…NOW!” She said staring at me intently.
I looked over at the clock on my night stand. Professor Nicholson’s class would start in 30 min. I was late. I quickly hopped up making Autumn jump at my sudden movement.
“What? What’s wrong?”
I rushed to my closet trying to find something to wear that wasn’t already half packed in my suitcase. “Im late for class!”
Autumn stood up and rushed over to me. “Class?! You don’t have time for class! Are you crazy? We need to leave now! Do you understand me?” Autumn panicked.
“If we leave, Joe has to come with me! Do you understand me?!” I shouted at Autumn.
“Fine. Im coming with you!”
“No!” I quickly responded. “You can’t. I’ll come back for you.”
“We don’t have time for that. Once you get Joe, we have to hit the road…like, right away.” Autumn said with a worried expression.
I stared at her for a second confused at her sudden rush. Just last night she wasn’t ready to go. Why now?
“Autumn…what is it? Its something you’re not telling me. Why the rush all of a sudden?”
Autumn looked down at the ground as she hesitated. She then slowly looked back up at me and glumly responded, “Arianna is here.”

N.Y.U. College Campus
I rushed toward Professor Nicholson’s class in order to meet Joe and talk to him. I called him earlier to make sure he got there at least 10 min before class, and now I was running late due to my huge hangover from last night. I wanted Arianna to meet me here as well, but she was called in to work for her job. I knew after my drunken phone call last night to Joe was not suffice for him to believe the things I was telling him about Summer, hence the reason I wanted to tell him again today.
There he was standing against the wall with his right foot propped against the wall looking down at his watch. I quickly approached him with apologetic eyes.
“Hey, Joe…Im sorry I’m late. I have a huge hangover.”
“I bet.” Joe said flatly.
I could tell he was not going to entertain anything I said to say. I looked around to make sure Summer was nowhere around and pulled on Joe’s arm to follow me inside the professor’s class in the far corner at the top of the class auditorium steps. As we sat in the chair desks, Joe had the look of annoyance on his face. He propped his forearms on the small desk and waited for me to start.
“Okay…I know you don’t want to hear anything I have to say, but you have to think about what Im telling you.”
Joe sighed. “I don’t even know why Im here listening to you right now. You’re probably still drunk.”
“No, Im not. Joe…think about what we have learned so far in sociology class. It all makes sense.”
Joe only sat there staring at me with a blank expression. I couldn’t read him. He was always good at that.
“Look…Joe...what do I have to lose? Arianna and I have nothing to lose. Like I told you last night...Arianna is Summer’s cousin. Why would she lie about anything?”

N.Y Police Station
I took a deep breath as I walked into the N.Y.P.D. for yet another day. I said a quick prayer to myself as I walked thru the doors to the homicide department. ‘I am so ready to wrap this case up. I can feel it. I am so close. Just give me an inch, God. Give me an inkling of an inch…and I will run with it to put the human female mantis to rest.’ I thought to myself.
Not even five steps into the homicide department I ran right into Officer Spencer Pratt.
“What is it little man?” I stated rather than in a question. I then continued, “It better be good.”
“Good morning Detective Cyrus. You won’t believe it, but…I have two major things that just came thru this morning.” Officer Pratt stated as he continued to walk along side with me.
He paused as if he were waiting for my response. “For God’s sake man…keep talking.” I responded as I continued to walk to the temporary desk they gave me to use.
“The West Seattle Psychiatric Hospital sent in records indicating that they used to have a patient by the name of Summer Lovato a few years ago. She was due in for a regular 3 month re-evaluation but never came back after her first evaluation. And then…” he paused with a radiant smile place on his face. “…A call came from that Loft Apartment building where Mr. Nick Mathison and Summer Lovato reside. Due to the heat from the metal of the dumpster, a body part fell thru a trashbag when the trash guys came to pick up the trash. Come to find out, there were many chopped up body parts found in that trashbag.” He smiled after delivering what he knew what I would think was great news.
“Hot damn!” I exclaimed slapping him hard against his shoulder.
He quietly grabbed a hold of his shoulder as if he were in pain and silently mouthed the words, “Ouch.”
“Why are we still here? Let’s get over there!!” I quickly turned to look at two other officers who had approached us who were also helping me with my case. “I need someone to get one of those doctors from the West Seattle Psychiatric Hospital on the phone and in place, because I need to know what’s the status on this girl, Summer Lovato. Why the hell did they never catch up to this girl?”
I then started to rush out toward the door to head over to the Loft Apartment building curious to see whose body had been chopped to many pieces.
I then yelled back for Officer Pratt to hear me. “I want a warrant to go inside Summer Lovato’s apartment and we need to check on Nick Mathison…let’s pray its not him in the trash bag.”
When I noticed the officers not moving fast enough, I loudly shouted on my way out the door, “LET’S MOVE!!”

Chapter 18 --(Summer)
N.Y.U. College Campus
I quickly pulled up into the N.Y.U college campus student parking lot. As I put the car into park, I could see Autumn place her hand on the car door handle as if she were about to get out of the car. “No!” I shouted at her.
“What?!”
“You can’t get out of the car!”
“Why not?”
“Please Autumn, let me handle this. Let me go get Joe alone.” I pleaded to Autumn.
Autumn slowly lowered her hand from the car door handle and folded her arms across her chest as she glared at me. “What if you run into Arianna?”
“I wont. I will be quick and fast.”
“What if Joe doesn’t come with you?”
“He will. He loves me.” I reassured Autumn.
“Be careful.” Autumn said softly yet with firmness. “You better do what you have to do so we can leave out of here quickly.”
“I know.” I said with confidence.
Autumn was starting to make me nervous. I had never seen her this nervous before. However her nervousness made me more confident. I opened my side of the car door and hopped out, making my way over to Professor Nicholson’s class.

“That’s why she never talked about her family, Joe. They didn’t abandon her. They knew what was best for her. If anything, she was upset with them. Which she had every right to be, but to do all those things –“
“Stop it, Sel! Just stop it!” Joe shouted in a harsh whisper to me as we continued to talk in the corner of Professor Nicholson’s class. “I don’t know what kind of point your trying to prove but its not working.” Joe said obviously in a frustrated tone.
“Joe, you’re not listening to me. Do you really have so much of a strong feeling for her that you’re totally clueless in what im telling you right now?” I argued with Joe.
Before Joe had a chance to respond, we both could hear Prof. Nicholson clear his throat loudly calling the class to order as the class quickly filled up ready to start. Joe gave me one final look that I wasn’t sure of what he was trying to say with his eyes.
He then finally responded as he stood up from his chair, “Just drop it, alright? Drop it.” He then walked away before I had a chance to respond.
I took a deep breath realizing I had failed in trying to convince Joe that Summer was not the girl he thought she was. I slowly stood up and walked over to my regular desk I sat in for Professor Nicholson’s class. However, I opted to seat next to Joe in hoping to continue to talk to him during class as I looked around for Summer. She was nowhere in sight. When I took my seat next to Joe I saw him adjust himself in his seat and roll his eyes a bit. Was he annoyed at me? Perhaps he knew that I wasn’t going to drop the subject at hand. I obviously cared too much about Joe and he doesn’t seem to realize that.
Within the next few seconds, Professor Nicholson’s deep raspy voice took over within the small auditorium class room walls. “Today is like no other day, my members of this history class. I hope you’ve all done your homework.” He ended with a smirk.
There were a few groans coming from the student crowd. I guessed some had forgotten to do their assignments like I almost did prior to borrowing Joe’s notes.
As professor Nicholson continued to speak in front of the class, I leaned over to Joe and whispered, “Did you ever hear from Shane?” I was hoping that Joe would understand that Summer was cheating on him with Shane.
Joe shook his head no and adjusted himself in his desk to move away from me by leaning in the opposite direction.
I leaned further over into him. “Listen…like Brian Austin Green told me and Arianna last night, there—“
“Miss Romez! Is there something you and Mr. Jonas would like to share with the rest of us? Perhaps something we could benefit from the assignment over the weekend?”
I could hear Joe smack his teeth in frustration that we were caught by Professor Nicholson.
I could also hear the rustling from other students turning around in their seats to stare at Joe and I. I made eye contact with Daniel Radcliff as he stared back at me with a curious eye. I could feel my face begin to turn red out of embarrassment.
“Uhhh…”
“No, sir. We are just really anticipating what you could possibly tell us what happened in that historic era that we covered in our assignment over the weekend. We’re hoping you had first-hand experience.” Joe smiled as I was thankful that he interrupted me.
The class burst into laughter. Everyone knew that the era we were discussing, Professor Nicholson would in no way of form have any first-hand experience. I smiled and laughed with nervousness and basically relieved that Joe was there to save us both. Professor Nicholson only smiled at Joe’s smart comment.
“Perhaps…perhaps Mr. Jonas….perhaps.” He then turned around and continued to write on the long dry erase board on the wall.
I smiled and wrinkled my nose at Joe. It was my way of saying ‘thanks for bailing me out’. However Joe just shot me a cold glare.
That’s when my attention drew to the person walking down the steps of our small auditorium class room. It was Summer. She looked slightly frazzled. Not in her very well put together self as she usually dressed when in class. She walked down the steps and stopped in the aisle Joe and I were sitting. “Joe!” she whispered trying to get his attention since we were sitting toward the middle of the row.
This was obviously not the place or time to whisper since Professor Nicholson had already gotten on to Joe and I for talking. Joe looked down the row and saw Summer squatted down at the end of the row.
“Joe, come here.” Summer whispered.
“What? What are you doing?” Joe whispered back gesturing with his hands.
“Another wonderful interruption Mr. Jonas. This must be your lucky day.” Professor Nicholson chimed in slowly and loudly.
The class erupted into laughter.
Joe quickly gathered his belongings together and stood up. “Im sorry professor, really … I apologize.” Joe exited out of the row and followed Summer out of the classroom.
I wasn’t far behind. I wasn’t about to allow Joe to let Summer speak nothing but lies to him. As I exited, I could hear Prof. Nicholson say to the rest of the class in his charming, slow deep raspy voice, “Anyone else would like to join the caravan out of class?”
There were a few murmers of laughter thru out the room, however no one said a word or moved.
“Very well then…” prof. Nicholson’s voice trailed off.
As I walked up toward Joe and Summer outside in the hall, I could hear Summer begging to Joe. “Please Joe, if you love me, you will.”
“Summer, what is going on? What’s wrong?” Joe asked her.
I could see Summer’s eyes divert to me as I got closer. She didn’t respond.
“Yes, Summer, tell us what is really going on.” I said with my lips curled and my eyes slanted as I glared at Summer. challenging her.

“Wow. Looks like a really nice job on the chopping bit, huh?” Officer Pratt said to me as we covered the crime scene area which was the dumpster outside of the Loft Apartment.
I didn’t respond to the officer. Frankly, he was urking my last nerve once again. I scouted the crime scene area trying to picture the female mantis serial killer dropping the body here. I think I had my first major lead in the case and pretty sure who my suspect was. I approached one of the crime scene investigators asking a few questions.
“What does it look like the perp used to chop up the body parts?”
“I would say a nice sharp steak knife. You can see from the bone fragments that they had to saw the bone to tear it away.” The crime scene investigator said to me as he pointed to what appeared to be the lower leg body part.
I slightly cringed at the sight. “Right.” I flatly responded in a soft tone. I continued, “Any identification?” “You’re in luck detective. We found a receipt in the victim’s jean back pocket. Looks like our victim went to a local bar near the NYU campus and paid for things using his credit card. Name on the receipt says, Shane Labeouf.”
I took the receipt from the crime scene investigator wearing my rubber gloves to examine the receipt. I knew we had to notify his next of kin to really get an id of the victim.
“Detective Cyrus!” I heard a female officer call out to me in a panic as she ran up to me.
I looked at her waiting for her to respond.
“You better come with me. We have another homicide upstairs.”
“What?!” I said loudly in shock.
“In apartment 1709B, Nick Mathison. He’s been murdered.”
As I rushed inside the Loft Apartment building to get to Nick Mathison’s apartment, I yelled out for anyone to hear me, “I want a warrant of arrest out for Summer Lovato, now!”
It was evident to me that she was the serial killer. I was now positive that the day i arrived at her apartment, she wasn’t cleaning up her apartment just for the hell of it. And now Nick Mathison is murdered? Summer Lovato is going down.
