Chapter 19 --(Joe)
N.Y.U College Campus
I turned around to see Selena now approaching Summer and I. I looked back at Summer to see what her response would be toward Selena.
She narrowed her eyes at Selena. “Selena, this is none of your business. Leave us alone.” Summer reached for my arm and started to pull me behind her.
Before I had a chance to protest, Selena chimed in forcing Summer to stop. “Why don’t you just stop with all of your shenanigans, Summer. Tell Joe who you really are…or better yet, why not tell us about you and Shane.” Selena demanded.
Summer quickly turned around and charged up to Selena with fury in her eyes. I quickly extended my hand in front of Summer stopping her from touching Selena.
“Listen, BITCH! You don’t know anything about me! I suggest you leave us alone now or you will regret it later.” Summer shouted.
“Whoa…let’s all just calm down here, alright?” I said in shock at Summer’s outrage.
I looked at Selena’s expression and I could tell she was taken by surprise as well.
“You see what I mean, Joe? She’s crazy! Just like her cousin Arianna said.”
I quickly extended my hand out in defense gesturing for Selena to stop.
I then felt Summer pulling my hand to follow her. “Joe, please, just come with me, okay? Selena doesn’t know what she’s talking about. Listen, my sister Autumn is in the car, and she will help explain everything.”
“Summer, babe, slow down. Just tell me what’s going on.” I pleaded with Summer as I followed her lead to what seemed like she was taking me out to the student parking lot.
I noticed Selena was following us with determination in her eyes. “Oh really, Summer? Your sister? According to Arianna—“
“Sel, stop!” I yelled out to Selena in frustration.
I felt she was only making things worse.
Summer stopped and quickly turned around shoving Selena to the ground before I was able to stop her. Selena fell backwards flat on her butt as her books and papers she held fell to the ground. Selena had a bewildered look on her face. It was as if she couldn’t believe Summer had pushed her. I had to admit I was shocked too. Summer walked up to Selena towering over her. I quickly pulled Summer back grabbing on to her waist as Summer tried to resist me.
“Bitch! Arianna doesn’t know shit! You don’t know shit! LEAVE US ALONE!!” Summer shouted.
At that moment the campus security guard started to make his approach toward us. “Hey! What’s going on over there?” he yelled from a distance as he continued to make his way over to us.
“We’re good!” I quickly shouted to the security guard.
I then calmly stated to Summer looking intently into her eyes, “Baby, chill out.”
I then turned my attention to Selena to help her up from the ground. She was half way up from the ground by this time.
Selena swiped my hand away as if she were upset with me and didn’t need my help.
“Joe let’s go.” I heard Summer say as she pulled my hand once again. I looked back at Selena with apologetic eyes and continued to follow Summer.
The campus security guard approached us with his hands resting on his belt buckle. “What’s going on?” “Nothing. We’re good Mr. Fake Ass Cop, Sir.” Summer blurted out to him as she continued to walk. “Excuse me?” the security guard said with a frown on his face.
I looked at his name tag which read: Johnnie Raye. “Listen, uh…Mr. Johnnie Raye, everything’s ok, alright? You know how it is when you have women trouble, right?” I smirked at him. I then patted his beer belly, charmingly stating, “Im sure you’ve had your fair share of women problems.”
The security guard named Johnnie responded with a hearty chuckle as he pulled up his pants by holding his belt around his waist. I chuckled with him hoping he would leave the situation alone.
I then heard Summer call for my attention as if she were in a rush. “Joe! Please, come on!”
I gave her a nod telling her I was coming. Before I had the chance to walk away, Johnnie placed his hand on my chest stopping me. “Just keep it down around here. Some classes are still in session.”
“Yes, sir.” I said as we walked our separate ways.
I quickly caught up to Summer as we continued to walk to her car. I grabbed her arm to stop her just before we reached her car. “Summer! Stop! What the hell is going on?”
“Joe, I will explain everything later. I just need you to come away with me.” She pleaded.
“Come away with you? Where? What’s wrong? Summer, do you know something about Shane?”
Summer let out an exasperated sigh in disbelief. “You’re going to believe her over me?” Summer said as her eyes drifted to a figure coming up behind me.
I turned around to follow Summer’s gaze and saw Selena approaching us.
“Selena doesn’t know anything! I swear!” Summer continued to plea her case.
My attention then drifted to the person coming up behind Summer. It was a red haired girl I had seen Selena hang out with a time or two. Her eyes were focused on Summer.
“What about me, Summer?” the girl said flatly.
Summer whipped around to see the girl standing there. “Arianna?” Summer said softly in shock. “Yeah…it’s me. What are you doing here, Summer? You’re supposed to be in Seattle.” the girl whose name was Arianna said.
I looked at Summer waiting to hear her reply.
Summer looked like she had fear in her eyes and started to panic. I could see her chest rise up and down as she began to breathe heavily.
“I…I …I can explain everything…” Summer hesitated. She then looked at me with pleading eyes, “…Joe…please…come with me. I swear…I can explain everything.”
Her eyes began to water. I was so lost and confused I didn’t know what to say. I started to reach for her when she quickly backed away.
“Wait…I’ll let Autumn explain everything.” Summer rushed to her car to open the passenger side door. “Autumn get out! Get out now!” Summer opened the door to find no one inside. She looked in the backseat and stood up straight as her eyes quickly roamed the student parking lot as if she were looking for Autumn. “Wha –what did you do?” Summer stated softly as she continued to look around still standing by her car.
“Summer…it’s okay. Calm down.” Arianna said calmly as she walked slowly toward Summer.
“Stop!” Summer yelled at Arianna. Tears started to roll down her cheek as her eyes continued to roam the parking lot.
I felt so bad for Summer. She looked like she was about to lose it.
I started to walk toward her, wanting to embrace her, “Summ—“
“No! Stop!” she quickly said interrupting me and forcing me to stop. “AUTUMN!!! Autumn where are you?!”
“Summer…stop.” Arianna said calmly.
“No! What did you do to her Ari, huh? What did you do to Autumn? Where did you take her?!” “Summer…Autumn is not here.” Arianna softly explained to Summer.
“STOP LYING! You did something to her! I know you did, Arianna!”
“Summer, no! Autumn is dead!”
Arianna paused when it seem like Summer had stopped breathing as she stared back at her with hurtful eyes.
“You’re lying! What did you do to her?!” Summer said thru her tears.
Arianna started to cry as one tear fell down her cheek. “Summer….I didn’t do anything to her. Autumn died several years ago, remember? You killed her years ago.”
She narrowed her eyes at Selena. “Selena, this is none of your business. Leave us alone.” Summer reached for my arm and started to pull me behind her.

Chapter 20
(Several Years Ago...Autumn and Summer Age 11)
Autumn & Summer's Home In Seattle
“Autumn!! Summer!! Get in here now!” yelled a powerful male’s voice from inside the house.
Autumn and Summer both looked at each other as they stood outside in the front yard playing. “It’s Dale.” Summer said sadly to her twin sister Autumn, who was 4 minutes older than her.
Autumn began to cry after hearing her stepfather Dale call for them. “I don’t want to go in there.”
Summer hugged her sister Autumn as if it were the last time she would see her. “I promise, this is the last time he will ever touch you again. He will regret it.”
“Summer, what are you going to do?” Autumn asked.
“The same thing I always do whenever someone picks on us. Remember what happened to little Lucy down the street?” Summer smiled with an evil stare.
Autumn gasped. “Summer, no! You? You pushed her off the top of the slide the other day and broke her legs?”
Summer nodded with pleasure. “Remember little Bobby in our 3rd grade class? When he got hit by that car?”
“So you really did push him out into the road?” Autumn asked with curiosity in her eyes.
Summer nodded yes with a smirk.
The girls both started to giggle.
“Girls! Your father said come inside!” Autumn and Summer’s mother yelled from inside the house.
“Okay! Coming!” Autumn and Summer said in unison.
“He’s not our father.” Summer mumbled under her breath.
Summer then spoke quietly yet in a rushed tone to Autumn. “Now listen…When he’s…done…” Summer hesitated as she thought about the bad things their stepfather was about to do to her beloved sister. “…You run out of there as fast as you can.”
Autumn nodded in agreement as both girls ran inside the house.
It was a fact that after he did his 'dirty work', he would be too tired to move quickly to catch Autumn if she ran.
Their mother was in the kitchen cooking dinner while their stepfather sat in the living room watching television. He wore a white 'wife beater' tank top and dirty oil stained brown pants. The girls ran into the living room and stood in front of Dale, their stepfather.
He sat there looking up at them as he licked his lips. He chuckled to himself. “Autumn, Summer…you both look really pretty today.”
Autumn and Summer flatly responded in unison, “Thank you.”
Dale took a peek into the kitchen to make sure the girls’ mother couldn’t hear him. “But Autumn, you know you’re my favorite, right?”
“Yes sir.” Autumn replied shyly with deep sadness in her eyes.
He then stood up from his favorite plaid, dark brown plush rocking chair saying, “C’mon, let’s go.” He grabbed Autumn’s hand. He then turned to look back at Summer, “Keep your mother company will ya?” he stated rather than in a question.
Summer nodded yes obediently.
Summer then watch her stepfather disappear down the hall into the back room with Autumn where he was going to sexually molest and rape her. It was something he had done over and over again. At times he would touch Summer inappropriately, but never raped her. Summer hated to see her sister suffer with this monster who was supposed to be a father figure to them. He made them promise to keep the secret from their mother. He made them believe that their mother would never believe them if they told. And if they told, he promised that their mother would make sure to put them in a foster home and separate them. However, Summer made sure that this was going to be the last time the girls would ever have to worry about his touch and threats.
Summer quickly ran outside the house and ran to the window of the bedroom her stepfather had taken Autumn.
Earlier in the day, Summer had raised the window slightly placing a thin small rope inside the bedroom. Summer knew his routine. Dale would always talk to them first and then proceed to do his 'dirty work'. When he would rape Autumn, it would last 3 horrible minutes of her life; at least one day out of the week. They both knew that today was that day.
Summer quietly crouched below the window preparing to light the house on fire. She wasn’t going to start until he started his 'dirty work'.
“You understand why we do this right?” Dale asked Autumn.
Autumn nodded sadly as she stood next to the bed.
“It’s just sex. Don’t take it personal. Every man has their wants and needs. That’s what you’re here for. My needs..and I want you.”
Summer heard his words and frowned with so much hate toward her stepfather. He would tell her same thing about what every man wanted and needed and why she was there for him.
“Take off your clothes, Autumn. All of them.” His voice trailed off.
Within the next couple of seconds, Summer could hear Autumn’s small muffles of crying. He was performing his 'dirty work'.
Summer quickly poured the gasoline on to the wall of the house and slowly drenched the rope that lead inside the room as well. She drained the gasoline inside the walls of the bedroom without Dale noticing.
Summer ran as fast as she could back inside the house pouring the rest of the gasoline down the hallway and into the kitchen. She then rushed to get her mother.
“Mom, quick! You have to hurry! I have to show you something!”
“What?” her mother asked in shocked as she felt herself being dragged by Summer out of the house.
Summer pulled her mother out of the house and ran to the side of the house. Summer quickly took out her homemade firecracker and lit it. She looked at her watch. By this time, Dale should be done with his 'dirty work'. Autumn should be running away as fast as she can out of the house right now, Summer thought.
Just as she threw the firecracker at the side of the house walls that were drenched with gasoline, Summer heard her mother say something and run back into the house.
“Wait honey, I have to get the bread out of the oven before it burns."
“MOTHER NOOOO!!!” Summer yelled at the top of her lungs for her mother not to go back in the house.
Before Summer knew it, the house burst into flames and quickly exploded allowing the force to sweep Summer off her feet and fly 20 feet backwards into the air.
