Chapter 11 (Pt 1 - 2)
Mike and Selena exited off the plane and walked into the Toronto, Canada airport. There was a man in a police uniform standing there holding a sign with their names on it. Mike and Selena approached him. “Detectives Jonas and Ramirez?” Mike and Selena nodded yes.
“Very nice to meet you two fine people. I’m Sargeant Ray Olsen. I’ll be the one helping you guys out with your case.” He extended his hand to greet the both of them.
Mike and Selena both shook his hand greeting him.

Mike and Selena both shook his hand greeting him.
At that moment, a couple of other men dressed in uniform who were with Sgt. Olsen took Mike and Selena’s bags and escorted them out of the airport. In a southern country accent, Sgt. Olsen continued, “The officers will be escorting your bags to the hotel of which you both will be staying in while you here in Toronto. Oh and by the way, welcome to Toronto.” He finished with a smile as they walked.
Selena and Mike both smiled back saying thank you.
Sgt. Olsen turn to them both asking, “Is this yall’s first time here?”
They both answered yes.
“Well unfortunately we have to welcome you both here under these circumstances. What we are going to do is take you both to the station, so we can all get to work. That’s okay with yall, right?"
“Of course, by all means. The sooner the better.” Mike said as they reached the Sargeant’s car.
“Great! Yall have your files and stuff with you, correct?”
“Yep. Got it right here.” Selena said as she raised up the briefcase she was carrying for Sgt. Olsen to see.
“Good deal. Let’s go.” Sgt. Olsen said.
They all hopped into his car. Selena sat in the front passenger seat while Mike sat in the back seat behind Sgt. Olsen who drove.
Sgt. Olsen was a man who appeared to be in his early 50’s. He wore a uniform that a typical sherriff would wear, and the matching hat to go with it. “Now throughout this whole process, I should be able to be with yall to help out in anyway that I can. But if not, Officer Nicole Anderson will take my place.” Sgt. Olsen continued in his southern accent. “Actually, she may be joining us anyway.”
Acknowleding his southern accent, Selena asked, “Were you born and raised here?”
Sgt. Olsen let out a small chuckle. “No, actually I was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. I’ve been here in Canada for eight years strong. I guess you can tell from my slight southern accent.”
Selena smiled and nodded in agreement.
“Slight accent? I would say its rather stong.” Mike teased Sgt. Olsen with a smile. They all laughed. He then continued, “Wow, what a change. From Alabama humidity to the cold air of Canada…that’s pretty drastic.”
Looking in the rear view mirror to glance at Mike as he spoke, Sgt. Olsen responded with a smile, “Yeah it was. So is it cold enough for you?”
“Well, its not that bad. I thought it would be colder.” Mike replied.
“Actually, according to the weather man, this is supposed to be our warmest week, and it’s only 30 degrees.” Sgt. Olsen informed them. “You’re kidding? Wow.” Selena said looking out the window as they passed by a wooded scenery.
Minutes later, the sergeant finally pulled into a parking space at the police station and turned off the ignition. “So, what did you two fine detectives want to inquire about first?”
As they both hopped out of the car and followed the sergeant into the station, Selena responded, “Well, actually, we were hoping we could get some info on this Canada car tag we found near the crime scene in Chicago. We have concerns on the possible connection.”
“Alright, sure thing.” Sgt. Olsen responded as he opened the door for Selena and Mike to enter inside the station.
As they walked in, Selena unbuttoned her leather coat feeling the warm heat in the station. Selena looked around noticing the other officers walking around with short sleeves on. It was as if everyone seem to be enjoying the so-called warm weather outside. Selena felt overdressed for the weather. She had on a nice pink collard long sleeves shirt and black dress pants with black stack heel boots on, and of course her favorite thick red scarf.
Mike leaned over to Selena and whispered in her ear, “I take it everyone here is enjoying the crisp warm weather.” Selena giggled a little, realizing her and Mike had the same thoughts.
“Right this way detectives.”Sgt. Olsen said leading them into a direction that seemed to be in the direction to his office. Instead he lead them to another officer. Sgt. Olsen continued, “Detective Ramirez, Detective Jonas, this is my best officer who is always on the job, and who may soon one day become a detective herself. This is officer Nicole Anderson.
Selena and Mike both smiled back saying thank you.

Nicole Anderson
Nicole stood up from her desk with a broad smile and extended her hand out to greet Selena and Mike. She then said, speaking mainly to Mike, “It’s a pleasre to meet and be able to work with you both. I hope to be just like the both of you someday.”
Mike and Selena both smiled and laughed.
“Likewise, officer Anderson.” Mike smiled and winked at her as he greeted her.
“Oh, please…call me Nicole.” She said blushing with a smile. She then pushed a few loose strands of her mousy brown hair from her ponytail behind both of her ears.
Selena noticed flirty transaction between the two and rolled her eyes slightly.
Alright, folks, let’s go ahead and get to the nitty gritty.” Sgt. Olsen said. They all followed him into his office. As he took off his hat, exposing how slightly bald he was at the crown of his head, he continued, “So, let’s see this car tag.”
“Well, we couldn’t bring the actual car tag for jurisdiction purposes, but we have the paperwork of this tag. But we were unable to find out who the car was registered to. That’s where we’re hoping you guys can help. The tag was in bad shape due to a car explosion and we only have a few legible letters and numbers on the tag.”
“Wow, we could have a lot of matches without the full tag number.” Sgt. Olsen said in deep thoughts.
“Yes, unfortunately. We also want to find out about this email address.” Mike said as he show them a piece of paper with the email address that was found on Lindsey’s laptop computer. We were hoping you could at least give us or show us the location of this company that shares this address.”
“Wow.” Sgt. Olse said. “Your Lieutenant said you guys were working on a doosey of a case. I may need to get officer Lerman in here to help you guys out too. I think he may be of some help also.” He looked at Nicole as if asking for her reassurance that Officer Lerman would be a good choice to help out. Nicole nodded in agreement. “Okay, Nicole, go ahead and take them with you to look at this car tag deal. I’ll go ahead and call in officer Lerman and fill him in on the details.
Nicole nodded and lead Mike and Selena to follow her. “Thanks, Sergeant.” Selena said as she followed Nicole out of the door.
-------------
After an hour or so passed, Selena and Mike sat near Nicole as she did the search for the car tag. Nicole was able to find six matches as to who the car tag would belong to. “Check this out,” Nicole said pulling up a report on the computer, “One of our matches, says the family reported a Tara Lovato missing a few years ago.”
“Really? We should definitely check that out.” Said Selena.
Mike and Selena both smiled and laughed.

Logan Lerman
At that moment, Sgt. Olsen soon approached them all with another officer. This officer was introduced as Officer Logan Lerman.
“Nice to meet you.” Mike said as he shook his hand.
“Hello.” Selena said as she also shook officer Lerman’s hand.
Officer Lerman shook Selena’s hand slowly and gazed into her eyes. It was as if he was in awe of her beauty. Officer Logan Lerman responded in a daze, “Hello.”
Selena found herself having to pull her hand away since Officer Lerman didn’t appear to want to let her hand go.
“Officer Lerman will also be of some assistance today. I think he can help with the email situation.” Sgt. Olsen said.
“Great. Welcome aboard officer Lerman,” Mike said with a warm smile.
“Thanks.”
“Okay, so let’s get on the road. Let’s go talk to some people.” Selena said getting impatient.
“You guys found information already?” Sgt. Olsen asked with a surprised look.
“Yep.” Mike replied.
“Fantastic. Well yall get on out there. Do your thang. If you need me, I’ll be here.” Sgt. Olsen said proudly.
“You’re not coming?” Selena asked.
“Well I figure you have Lerman and Anderson with you, I’ll just make it crowded. So yall get on out there.” Sgt. Olsen smiled. Selena continued to follow the rest out of the station.
As Selena and Mike buttoned their jackets, Nicole and Lerman walked out of the station without their jackets. Noticing, Mike stated, “So, I assume this is great weather for you guys.”
“Yeah, man. This is some awesome weather.” Logan said.
“Hey, Logan, where are you going? I parked over here.” Nicole said pointing in the opposite direction form where they were walking.
“Okay, but I was going to drive.” Logan replied.
“No, I wanted to drive.” Nicole stated.
“No, I wan –“
“Whoa, whoa, whoa.” Mike interrupted calmly. “Why don’t you both drive, and –“
“Great, then you come with me.” Nicole said quickly interrupting Mike and grabbing his arm pulling him in the direction to her car. Mike looked back at Selena shrugging his shoulders as he was basically being dragged by Nicole.
“Fine. Then you come with me, beautiful.” Logan said looking at Selena with a smile.
“Great.” Selena mumbled sarcastically.
Logan and Selena got into a white jeep with red and blue stripe colors, which represented their police. While Nicole and Mike got into a white Taurus car with the same colors as the jeep. Logan kept his eyes on Selena as he started the car with a smile on his face. Selena forced a smile on her face and turned to look out the window. As he started to drive off, he said, “So…what’s your first name again?”
“Selena.”
“That’s pretty. Mine is Logan, incase you forgot.” He replied as he kept looking over at Selena with a smile. “You can call me whatever you want. You can call me Logan, or just Lerman or even just Officer. Is that how it is with you? What would you prefer me to call you?” He asked.
“Uh, it really doesn’t matter.” Selena said getting annoyed at the fact he was talking too much and getting on her nerves. She then forced another smile on her face to try and remain nice.
“That’s cool.” He paused for a couple of seconds and then continued, “You know, I must say…that color pink on you…really brings out your eyes. Very pretty. Those are your eyes, right? I mean, you don’t wear contacts do you?” Selena took a deep breath very annoyed. “No, these are my eyes…no contacts.” She then picked up her cell phone and dialed a number. “Excuse me.” Selena said to Logan so he would know not to speak to her because she was about talk on the phone. She needed to escape this guy who was obviously hitting on her. She thought about Mike.
“Jonas.” Mike answered the phone.
“Hey, its me Ramirez.”
“Hey, what’s up?”
“Uhm, I was thinking maybe we should go check out that company about the email address first before talking to our car tag matches on the list.”
“Sounds good. I’ll tell Nicole here to continue following you guys.” Mike said and ended the call.
Selena ended the call as well, although she really didn’t want to. Selena told Logan of the change in direction.
“Cool. We are about 5 minutes away. We should be there in no time.” Logan stated.
“Good.” Selena said graciously. She was happy that she didn’t have to spend much time with him any longer by herself.
Once they reached their destination, everyone hopped out of the cars and started to walk into the building following Logan. Selena pulls Mike to the side gently as they continue to follow Logan, saying, “Let’s switch when we get back in the cars.” Mike looked at Selena with a puzzled expression. “I’ll explain later.” Selena whispered and walked ahead a little.
“Nice to meet you.” Mike said as he shook his hand.
“Hello.” Selena said as she also shook officer Lerman’s hand.

Part 2
The group walked back to their cars from visiting the company that was responsible for having the email address found on Lindsey’s laptop. They found out that the email account belonged to a Liam Hemsworth. Selena and Mike now believe that Liam Hemsworth was the person that may have been talking to Lindsey Cyrus before her disappearance. Liam Hemsworth, is now a possible suspect.
“C’mon, let’s go visit Liam Hemsworth. We have some questions to ask him.” Mike said as they walked into the parking lot.
“I agree. So, come on beautiful.” Logan said to Selena and gesturing for her to come with him.
Selena immediately looked at Mike nudging him in the arm as a reminder that she wanted them to switch cars.
Mike looked at Selena confused and not sure why she was reacting in this way.
Selena widen her eyes emphasizing for him to go with Logan. She gestured her head into the direction for him to walk with Logan.
Mike was trying hard to figure out her gestures, until finally he realized what she was trying to say. “Oh! Yeah…uhm, why don’t we switch. Detective Ramirez was telling me how nice it was to ride in your jeep, Lerman. I think I want to take a ride…you don’t mind, do you Nicole?” Mike lied.
“No, not at all.” Nicole said with a smile.
“Oh…okay…” Logan hesitated.
Selena smiled and walked toward Nicole to get into her car while Mike walked with Logan to his jeep.
Selena was relieved that Logan wasn’t there to get on her nerves and trying to flirt with her. Selena wanted to have quiet time to think about the case. Just when she thought she was going to have that quiet time, Nicole started to talk. “So…can I ask you a question?”
Selena put on a fake smile, and forced herself to speak friendly. “Yeah, sure. What’s up?”
“How the hell do you work and keep focus while working with that fine looking partner of yours?” Nicole asked with a smile as if she were imagining how Mike looked.
“Who, Mike?” Selena asked shocked. She then continued in a ‘matter of fact’ tone. “Easy.”
“You don’t think he looks good?” Nicole asked surprised.
Hesitating a little, Selena replied, “Well…I mean, he’s alright. But I don’t look at him like that. He’s just my partner…and that’s it.”
“Yeah, well, if I were you…I think I’d ask him to marry me.” Nicole gushed. She then blurted out, “I bet he’s great in bed.” Shocked at her statement, Selena gasped. “Nicole!”
“What? Don’t you wonder?” she laughed.
“Uhm, no! Do me a favor, Nicole, why don’t you go ahead and ask him out!”
“No, I couldn’t do that! I have to stay focused. Besides, you guys are only here for a few days. I live here and he doesn’t. It would never work out. But it doesn’t hurt to say how gorgeous he is. And that smile! Oh my!” Nicole gushed once again.
They both laughed.
“You are so crazy!” Selena teased Nicole.

They arrive at Liam Hemsworth house. Logan opted to stay in the jeep as the rest of the group walked up to the door. Within seconds, a woman with flowing dark hair answers the door. “Yes?”
“Hi, Im officer Anderson and we’re looking for Liam Hemsworth.” Nicole said exposing her badge.
“Is he in some kind of trouble or something?” the woman asked concerned. “No ma’am. We just have some business with him. Is he here?” Nicole responded.
“Uhm, yea. Come on in.” the woman replied and opens the door wider. The woman then lead them into a room where Liam Hemsworth sat in a wheelchair. He had a cast wrapped around his foot up to his upper right thigh area.

Liam & Vanessa Hemsworth
“What can I do for you all?” Liam said as he turned his wheelchair to face them. Nicole introduced herself, Selena and then Mike. Selena then took over the conversation. “We understand that the email address [email protected] belongs to you. Is that correct?”
“Uhm, yeah…it used to.” Liam responded.
“What do you mean, used to?” Mike asked.
“I mean, I don’t use it anymore. I haven’t used that email for years now.”
“Do you know this girl?” Selena asked showing him the picture of Lindsey Cyrus. “No. I've never seen her before in my life.” He replied confidently.
“So, you’re telling us, you never contacted this girl, using that email address?”
“No.”
There was a slight pause and an awkward silence. At that moment, the woman who answered the door said, “Can I get anyone something to drink?”
Everyone answered no.
Mike looked at the woman saying, “Im sorry, we didn’t get your name. You are…?”
“Vanessa. Vanessa Hemsworth. Liam is my husband.”
Mike forced a fake smile on his lips as he replied to Vanessa, “Greetings, Vanessa.” He then turned his attention back to Liam. “Mr. Hemsworth, are you sure you are telling us the truth?”
“Yes, detective. Are you implying that I am lying?”
“Well, I don’t know, you tell me. Maybe you can tell us that if what you’re saying is true: the fact that you don’t know this girl named Lindsey Cyrus and you never contacted her using this email address; why is it that we have records of someone making contact with her very recently?” Mike said showing Liam a paper with proof that his email account was added to Lindsey’s pen pal list 2 months ago.
Liam was speechless as he looked at the information. After a long pause, he responded, “That’s impossible. That can’t be right.”
“Mr. Hemsworth, if you’re withholding any information, you do realize there will be major consequences.” Selena said firmly.
“But, Im not –“
“What happened to your leg, Mr. Hemsworth?” Mike asked curiously interrupting Liam.
“Stop, don’t say anything else, honey. I think you all should leave.” Vanessa, Liam’s wife informed them. “The nerve of you cops to come in our house, and demand answers when you all never did anything for me or my family when we reported my sister, Tara, missing years ago!” Vanessa frowned upset.
“Nessa, please don’t.” Liam pleaded with Vanessa to stop her from getting angry with them.
The name Nessa rung a bell in Selena’s head. One of the names on the list for the burnt Canada car tag, belonged to a Nessa Hemsworth. Selena turned to look at Vanessa. “Im sorry, one more question. You wouldn’t happened to have had a blue 1999 Honda Accord registered under your name would you?”
“Yes! Like I said, I gave that car to my sister. We reported her, and that car missing years ago. We told the police, we believe her boyfriend at the time had something to do with her disappearance, but YOU, the police, never did anything!” “What is your sister’s name?” Mike asked.
“Tara. Tara Lovato!”
“Do you have a picture of her?” Selena asked.
Vanessa calmed her nerves silently. She took a deep breath and wondered why they would want a picture of her. “Well, don’t you have a picture of her on file already? We gave it to you guys before.”
“Can you please just entertain us.” Mike replied.
Vanessa walked to a table in her living room and grabbed a framed pictured of her sister Tara.
“Uhm, yeah…it used to.” Liam responded.
“What do you mean, used to?” Mike asked.
“I mean, I don’t use it anymore. I haven’t used that email for years now.”

“This is my sister, Tara Lovato. Lovato is my maiden name. She is my baby sister. Her eyes are uniquely blue. But she sometimes wore brown contacts, like in this picture about 3 years ago. The police has a photo on file with her blue eyes.”
Selena and Mike looked at each other once they saw her picture. They both wondered if they finally found the identity of Jane Doe. (the dead body they thought was Lindsey Cyrus)
Vanessa noticed them exchanging looks. “What? You found her?” Vanessa said as she felt her heart beat start to race. Liam wheeled himself closer to the group. He stated, “If Tara is alive somewhere out in this world, she would be the only other person I know to use my email account. Not me.”
“Why would your sister contact Lindsey Cyrus? Vanessa, do you know Lindsey?” Selena asked confused.
“No. I don’t. I’ve never seen that girl before in my life.” Vanessa said starting to get emotional. “Look, did you find my sister or not? Is she alive? Because for years we thought she was dead and we accepted it. But if you’re telling me she’s alive…tell me now!”
