Chapter 26 ~ Two ½ Weeks Later
_ It was almost 5:00pm Sunday evening when Nick dropped
Josslyn off at Joanna’s place. Nick remained at Joanna’s front door not intending
to go inside her apartment.
“Okay pumpkin, I will see you later okay?”
“Okay, daddy! Don’t work too hard tomorrow okay?” Josslyn said sweetly.
Nick smiled as he knelt down to her level. “Okay, I promise. Hug and kiss?”
Josslyn hugged Nick’s neck tightly and kissed his cheek. Nick kissed her cheeks and pretended to munch on them making her laugh. “Daddy…”
“Love you pumpkin.”
“Love you too! See ya next time!” Josslyn said and ran off inside Joanna’s apartment.
Joanna stood there at the door and stared at Nick as he stood up straight. She wore a fitted shirt showing her growing belly.
“I’ll talk to you later.” Nick said flatly as he started to walk away.
“Nick, are you sure everything is okay?”
“Yeah. Why?” Nick stopped and turned toward her.
“Your mom and I have been talking and she was saying how much that pain medication you’re still taking may be making you depressed.” Nick chuckled at the thought. “You did not talk to my mother about me being so-called depressed.” He said in disbelief.
“We’re worried about you. Especially me. We just think you're relying to much on your pain pills.”
Nick turned the brown fitted baseball cap he was wearing toward the back. He grinned and said, “Jo…Im fine. Trust me.” Nick started to walk away.
“Hey…I have another doctor’s appointment tomorrow. Can you come with me this time?”
“I have to work.” Nick said flatly.
“It’s at 10 in the morning.”
Nick thought for a moment. He didn’t have to work until 2pm and clearly she knew this. He finally stated,“Yeah…okay.”
Joanna smiled. “Thank you. Will you come to pick me up?”
“Sure. See ya tomorrow.” Nick said and walked away.
Nick hopped in his car and drove to the local gas station. It was a chilly and windy day as the autumn leaves were billowing in the wind. Nick quickly pumped gas into his car and hopped back into his car. He dialed Liam’s number.
“Hello?”” Liam answered.
“Im about to hit the road, bro.” Nick responded into his cell phone.
Liam chuckled. “So you’re gonna do it? Where’s Jossy?”
“I just dropped her off at Jo’s.” Nick responded with a grin.
“You are a crazy son of a bitch. I can’t believe your ass is driving 5 hours up to Atlanta when you haven’t spoken to that girl in almost a month. What if she still refuses to talk to you?”
“That’s just the chance im taking. At least I know I took all the drastic measures to make this work. Trust me…this is the last time Im chasing this girl up and down the road.”
Liam sighed. “Alright bro, be careful. Don’t get arrested or get into any fights.” Liam teased Nick.
Nick laughed and ended the call.
He pulled out from the gas station and immediately hit the highway heading north toward Atlanta, Georgia as he blasted the music in his car.

_ “Brin why are we out here in the cold?” Raven said as she
gave herself a hug by wrapping her arms tightly around herself.
Sabrina gave her a light laugh. “It’s not that cold.”
“Do you see these leaves forming their own tornado in the wind?”
Sabrina playfully hit Raven in the arm.
They laughed as they watched Cody and Raven’s nephew Jermaine, skateboard down the sidewalk as they walked around Piedmont Park.
“Which reminds me…have you heard from Josh lately?” Raven asked as she watched Cody and Jermaine.
Sabrina pulled a few loose strands of her hair blowing in the wind and tucked it behind her ear, “He called yesterday. Whenever he calls, I just give the phone to Cody.”
“Good for you, mami. I still can’t believe how he practically attacked you like a freaking horny hound dog. What are you going to do when he moves here in 5 months?”
Sabrina shrugged her shoulders as she watched Cody try one of those tricks on his skateboard. Jermaine performed a trick on his skateboard and fell to the ground as both boys laughed.
“Jermaine, be careful! Crazy!” Raven shouted to Jermaine with a slight frown on her face.
Sabrina giggled as her and Raven took a seat on the bench still watching the boys play.
“So…what is it that you have to tell me?” Raven said tightening her coat to shield the wind from surrounding her.
Sabrina sighed. “Well…you’re the only one that will know about this as of right now…because…I don’t know what to do.”
Raven furrowed her eyebrows at Sabrina waiting for her to continue.
Sabrina continued without looking at her, “I just can’t get right. I think something is seriously wrong with me.”
Raven adjusted herself on the bench and turned to face Sabrina as she frowned with concern. “Girl…what did you do?”
Sabrina ignored Raven’s question and continued, “I just want to be happy, Raven.”
Raven placed her hand on Sabrina’s knee. “Sabrina…” she said wanting Sabrina to hurry and tell her what was wrong.
Sabrina took a deep breath as she looked up at Cody still playing. She then said, “Raven…Im pregnant.”
Raven raised her left brow. A smile slowly crept onto her lips. “Brin, that’s great!” Raven said cheerfully. She then saw the unhappy expression on Sabrina’s face. Raven became concerned. “Wait…why aren’t you happy? Having a baby is supposed to be good news…right? We should be happy, right?”
Sabrina shook her head no and looked down at her hands.
Raven leaned back as she rested her back on the bench back rest. “Why haven’t you told Kelly yet?”
“Because Im not sure if I want to keep it.”
“What! Why not? How far long are you?”
“The doctor said Im around 5-6 weeks pregnant. It's still too early to tell for sure.”
Raven thought for a moment trying to understand why Sabrina was so sad. She then finally said softly, “Brin…I don’t understand.”
Sabrina raised her eyes up looking at Cody. “I always wanted another baby. But Raven…I wanted to be happily married. I wanted to have a happy family the right way like my parents had.” She looked at Raven as her eyes began to water. “Why can’t I have that? Every time I think I’ve fallen in love with someone, something always turns out to be wrong. I thought Josh was going to be the guy I would happily marry and have his child. But what happened? I end up pregnant first and then he hops up and leaves me.” Sabrina chuckled thru her tears at the thought. “And only to find out that he’s the cousin of Zack…one of the guys to royally fuck up my life from the beginning.”
Raven didn’t know what to say. She sat there and listened to her best friend feeling a heavy heart for her.
Sabrina continued as she looked back down at her hands. “Years later…Im back in the same boat. I really thought Nick and I might turn into something so magical because I’ve known him almost all of my life. I tried so hard not to love him…and what do I do? I end up having sex with him and now Im stuck with his baby. Stuck with Nick’s baby when I know our relationship will never be anything because he’s in Gainesville, Florida building a family of his own with his daughter’s mother.” Sabrina finished as tears dropped down to her hands from her face. “Im just so tired of living this life.” Sabrina began to sob.
“Whoa…” Raven said a little upset as she scooted closer to Sabrina wrapping her arms around her. “Now you’re talking like a crazy woman. How can you be tired of living this life when you have a beautiful little boy over there, who loves you to death? Cody adores you. Nobody can say anything negative about you when they are around Cody. Cody is so proud of you. He’s always talking about how smart, and pretty his 'momma' is. Whenever some guy asks him if his mom is dating or how would he feel about some guy dating his mother, do you know what he says?”
Sabrina sat up straight and wiped her tears away.
Raven continued before Sabrina could answer, “He says they all have to go thru him first. If he doesn’t approve, nobody …and he means nobody, can be with you. He said it would be over his dead body.” Raven giggled.
Sabrina giggled thru her tears.
“So, you have a man. A little man who adores you to pieces. And when you tell him that he’s going to have a little sister or brother, I bet he’s going to be ecstatic. I bet he won’t even care who that child’s father is. He told me the other day that he didn’t care if his father came into his life or not. He said ‘my grandpa taught me to stand on my own and protect my momma’.” Raven giggled as Sabrina joined in her laughter.
Sabrina smiled as she watched Cody play with Jermaine on their skateboards.
“So…rather you like it or not, honey... You are having this baby. Even if you decide not to allow Nick to be in this child’s life, you have so much support around you, it’s ridiculous.” Raven continued.
Sabrina smiled at her best friend and hugged her. “Thanks Raven. I love you so much.”
“I love you too mami.” Raven said with a smile as she hugged her back.
Sabrina pulled away from their hug and shoved her loose strands of hair behind her ear once again. They sat there in silence as they watched the boys play.
“Brin…you know, you haven’t talked to Nick in about a month now.” Raven commented.
“Yeah..well, he stopped calling me.”
“Probably because he got tired of you not returning his calls. But now…you need to talk to him. You need to let him know that he’s about to be a father…of your child.”
Sabrina took a deep breath. “I will. Im just not ready. I don’t think he will be around anyway. Especially when Joanna has him wrapped around her finger with her pregnancy. Geez…it sounds so bad that Im the other woman who’s pregnant with his child at the same time.” Sabrina finished shamefully.
“So what…who cares?” Raven blurted out sounding like the comedian Joy Behar.
Sabrina laughed at Raven's imitation.
Raven cursed as she laughed. “You can’t help it that you’re so fertile. And, Joanna...she just needs to go kick rocks!”
They laughed out loud.
They were interrupted when a female’s voice called out Sabrina’s name. Sabrina and Raven turned around to see Taylor. She was standing a few feet away with her hands in her black coat pockets.
“Oh hell naw.” Raven mumbled.
“Taylor.” Sabrina stated coldly.
“Can we talk?” Taylor asked calmly as she stepped a little closer to the friends.
Raven looked at Sabrina waiting for her response.
“For what?” Sabrina asked staring at Taylor.
“Please?” she begged.
Sabrina and Raven exchanged glances.
“Sure.” Sabrina reluctantly stated as she stood up.
“I’ll be right here, Brin.” Raven shouted with an attitude as if giving some sort of warning to Taylor.
Taylor only looked at Raven not sure what to think.
Sabrina gave her a light laugh. “It’s not that cold.”

“I’ll be right here, Brin.” Raven shouted with an attitude as if giving some sort of warning to Taylor.
Taylor only looked at Raven not sure what to think.
_ Taylor and Sabrina walked a few feet away and stood near a
tree.
“How are you?” Taylor asked awkwardly.
“Fine.” Sabrina said quickly.
Taylor took a deep breath. “It’s good to see you…outside of a courtroom setting.” She laughed nervously.
Sabrina gave Taylor a blank stare.
Taylor took another deep breath understanding that Sabrina wanted her to get to the point. “Brin…I was just out here walking and I saw you and your friend. You’ve been on my mind a lot since I heard your testimony in court. I just wanted you to know that I filed for divorce last week.”
Sabrina was stunned however she remained silent as she continued to hear Taylor out.
Taylor continued, “I can’t be married to a rapist.” Taylor paused and looked down. She then looked everywhere in the park but at Sabrina. “I probably should have known all along though. How do you think I had a child with him? He raped me too.”
Sabrina’s mouth formed an ‘O’ shape totally shocked by what Taylor just told her. “Oh my God, Taylor…”
“But I was the stupid one to go ahead and marry him. Only because I didn’t want to hear my mother bad mouth me about how much of a whore I am. Even though she was half right.” Taylor laughed awkwardly.
Sabrina remained silent not joining in on her laughter.
“Josh was right. The prosecuting attorney, Eva…she was right. Zack was totally obsessed over you. He’s crazy. Do you want to know what made him rape me?”
Sabrina didn’t respond. She just waited for Taylor to continue.
“We were at Victoria’s house. Jacob was there too and we all were reminiscing about our high school days. Even our middle school days. We were looking thru our middle school yearbooks and our freshman year in high school yearbooks. You were really vibrant those two years…do you remember?” Taylor paused as she thought about those years. She then continued whipping her head back to allow the wind to remove her blonde curls from out of her face. “You were in a lot of pictures. Smiling that perfect smile that you have. And I noticed how Zack would just stare at your pictures. I called him out on it after Victoria and Jacob went to the back to have sex while listening to Jacob’s lame cd full of his rock and roll music.” Taylor snickered at the thought. “When it was just me and Zack, I asked him why he kept staring at your picture. He looked at me and asked if I ever thought of dying my hair black. Crazy, right? Next thing I know, we started making out. Normally I wouldn’t mind because that’s just something we always did anyway, ya know? I knew what he wanted to do…I was down for it, until he started to get really rough with me. Pulling my hair, trying to put me in positions I just wasn’t comfortable with. I told him to stop and that he was hurting me. He then covered my mouth and told me to 'shut the fuck up and take it'. He was so heavy, and so rough as he pretty much fucked my brains out. I tried to fight him off and scream telling him to stop because he was really hurting me. But of course he didn’t stop. He kept right on until he released all of his little soldiers inside of me. And then 9months later, our son was born. My mother almost disowned me because I had a baby out of wedlock. She called me a whore. She called me that for years. Even when I was ten years old. Whenever you used to come over and play at my house, she literally made me envy you. She always talked about how pretty you were. How much of a good girl you were. She would say stuff like, ‘Tay, why can’t you be more like your pretty friend Sabrina?’ She made me hate myself. So what did I do? I acted out. I learned how to do makeup really early…do you remember?” Taylor asked with a sarcastic laugh. She continued without allowing Sabrina to respond. “Remember when I got you to wear makeup? Good times…. But in reality, Brin. I was sooo jealous of you. I was always jealous of you. I thought you were so dumb that you didn’t realize how much Nick liked you. In fact…I hated that Nick liked you more than me, when I was the one who was wearing the makeup and sexy clothes.” Taylor laughed. “Then the more you got older, the prettier you became. All the boys were paying attention to you and not me. And that night at Zack’s party when we were 14. I hated you. All the guys were paying attention to you and not me. I hated you.”
“Yeah, well look where it got me.” Sabrina stated as she looked away briefly.
“And Im so sorry. I was so stupid to hate you for no reason. Im so sorry that I left you there. I had no idea that happened to you. All thru high school I loved every minute that everyone talked about you. I loved how you tried to make yourself look unpretty. But that didn’t work, because honestly Brin, no matter what you do…you’re always going to be pretty.”
“Taylor, so are you. Don’t let anyone tell you any different.” Sabrina said as she reached out to touch Taylor's arm in comfort.
Taylor smiled at Sabrina. “Thanks. Im so sorry I was a bitch to you for so many years. We were best friends. Best friends shouldn’t have turned out the way things turned out with us. I should have been there for you, and Im sorry.” Taylor said as a tear streamed down her face.
Sabrina stepped up to her and embraced her. This apparently pulled an emotional string with Taylor. She began to sob hard as they hugged. After a long moment of Taylor crying on Sabrina’s shoulder, they finally pulled away from their embrace.
“I really am, Brin. Im so sorry about Zack…Im sorry about the way Victoria and I treated you…I was awful and Im so sorry.”
“It’s okay. Im sorry I wasn’t there for you when we were little. I didn’t know your mom treated you so badly. I should have paid more attention to that. You were my best friend.”
Taylor smiled and waved her off saying not to worry about it. “I’ve missed our friendship so much. And I know you probably don’t want to be my friend anymore, but, Im happy to know that you have accepted my apology.”
“Well…we can still talk. I mean…we can be friends. Even though it wont be the same, but we have to start somewhere right?”
Taylor laughed in agreement. “Just tell your friend to stop looking at me like she wants to fight me.”
Sabrina laughed as she turned to look at Raven. “Who? Raven? Now she’s another story.”
Taylor and Sabrina both laughed.
