Chapter 21 --(Det. Mandy Cyrus)
Loft Apartment Building & Det. Mandy Cyrus
“It's like a fucking massacre in here.” I said to one of the crime scene investigators as I took off my rubber gloves. The investigator nodded in agreement as they turned the regular lights back on. I made a few notes in my note pad indicating what I had just seen as I stood in Summer Lovato’s apartment. The black lights that were once on revealed how much blood was splattered all over the apartment from chopping up Shane Labeouf’s body. Even though I caught Summer cleaning up that day, she couldn’t clean up what the black light would reveal.
Sticking my small note pad back into my black jean back pocket I walked out of Summer’s apartment and walked down the hall to Nick Mathison’s apartment where there were more cops, forensics people and yellow crime scene tape. I walked up to Officer Pratt who was speaking to another crime scene investigator.
“What else you got for me?” I asked putting on another pair of rubber gloves.
“Body specimen found on the young man’s …uh….member.” Officer Pratt said slightly uncomfortable.
“You mean his dick?” I reassured him.
Officer Pratt cleared his throat. “Yes ma’am.”
“Good. Let’s collect it and get it to the lab.” I said looking at poor Nick Mathison’s dead body as he laid on his sofa.
I then looked up at Officer Pratt. He looked like he was going to vomit. Before I had a chance to say anything, another officer walked up to me saying, “Detective? Mrs. Greene, the landlord of the apartment building is waiting for you outside.”
“Thanks.” I nodded.
I then turned my attention back to Officer Pratt. As I took off my gloves I patted him on the shoulder. “Hey…good job today, Pratt. You’re going to be a great detective one day. Annoying…but a good one. Keep it up.” I gave him a light smile and walked away.
He smiled in response.
I walked out of Nick’s apartment and raised the yellow crime scene tape above my head as I made my way up under it to speak with Mrs. Greene. I extended my hand out to Mrs. Greene as she had the look of bewilderment on her face. It was obvious she was shocked to see and hear about a double murder in her apartment building. I gave her a pleasant smile to calm her.
“Hi. Mrs. Greene? Im detective Mandy Cyrus…are you okay to speak right now?”
“Uhmm…yes…yes I think so.”
“Great…let’s go down the hall and away from all of this chaos, shall we?” I said escorting her down the hall.
She was a frail woman with blonde hair pulled away from her face. She looked so worried as if she were going to jail. I kept a smile on my face to reassure her she was okay and that she had done nothing wrong. She wiped a tear away from her face.
“Detective, I had no idea. I feel so bad.”
“No, no, no. You shouldn’t feel bad at all. It’s not your fault.” I rubbed her arm out of comfort. “What can you tell me about Summer Lovato?”
“Oh she was such a sweet girl. She had just moved here from L.A., she told me, and she was here to go to school. She was such a sweet girl.” She added in disbelief.
“Right. What school is that?”
“She didn’t tell me. But it could be Berkley, or N.Y.U...I don't know.”
She then paused as her eyes widened. She looked as if she had just thought about something.
“A twin. She told me she had a twin sister that was moving in here with her.”
“A twin?” I asked confused.
“Yes. But I told her this floor was only for single tenants. I told her I would keep it a secret for her since she really loved the apartment.”
I thought for a moment. “Mrs. Greene, do you have any video surveillance I can look at?”
“Yes.”
Moments later we were sitting in her security room looking at surveillance tapes. Officer Spencer Pratt had joined us. It was apparent that in the videos, Summer Lovato dressed one way when going out during the day, however differently at night.
“Is that her twin with the glasses? They look so much alike.” Officer Pratt said.
“Its like two different people…are you telling me her twin is the one doing all the killing? The girl with the glasses, is the same one I thought was Summer in that video at the Pub with David Henrie.” I said in deep thought. I thought about the West Seattle Psychiatric Hospital. I turned my attention to Officer Pratt. “Any word from any of those doctors at the West Psych Hospital?”
“No, I haven’t heard anything.”
I leaned back in my chair in deep thoughts. “We need to find this girl. Tell them to look for Summer Lovato either with glasses or not. Tell them to go to Berkly and get some people out there to N.Y.U and search for all her classes.” Officer Pratt nodded in agreement and hopped up from his chair.
At that moment my cell phone rung. “Cyrus speaking.” I answered.
“Detective Mandy Cyrus?” said a male’s voice on the other end.
“Yes?” I said slightly annoyed wanting this person to hurry on with the point of calling me while Im trying to solve my case.
“This is Dr. House calling from West Seattle Psychiatric Hospital.” I quickly sat up in my chair. He now had my full attention.
Sticking my small note pad back into my black jean back pocket I walked out of Summer’s apartment and walked down the hall to Nick Mathison’s apartment where there were more cops, forensics people and yellow crime scene tape. “This is Dr. House calling from West Seattle Psychiatric Hospital.” I quickly sat up in my chair. He now had my full attention.
Dr. House
“Yes, Dr. House, so glad you can return my call.”
“I understand you were questioning about one of my former patients Summer Lovato.” “Yes. To begin, I was hoping you could tell me why she is one of your former patients?” I asked getting my pen and pad out.
“Summer Lovato became one of my patients at the tender age of 15. The girl had become very depressed from the loss of her mother and twin sister, Autumn.”
“So she did have a twin sister?”
“Yes. Summer accidentally killed her mother and twin sister while trying to kill her stepfather. Unfortunately, she was not only successful in killing her stepfather, but her mother and twin sister as well. She became obsessed over the loss of her sister Autumn. So much so, she became her sister.”
“What do you mean, doc?” I asked as I continued to take my notes.
“Well Summer developed the bipolar disease early in her childhood. She was never treated for that which made things worse for her as she got older. Shortly after the loss of her mother and twin sister, her other family members felt she became a schizophrenia. They believed she purposely killed her mother and twin sister. They said she was hallucinating about her twin sister speaking to her, and acting as if her twin sister was there. They said she would treat the boys differently as if they were trying to always hurt her. This is what made her family admit her to this hospital. After several treatments, we properly diagnosed her with dissociative identity disorder…also known as split personality disorder. She was known for becoming a new person when she wore these black framed eye glasses. She called this person Autumn; Autumn, like her twin sister. This character ‘Autumn’ she created was this person she felt her twin sister Autumn would have grown up to become after their dramatic experience with their step father. But in reality, Summer actually took on the personality of her sister Autumn and when wearing the black framed eye glasses, she turned into who she really was…Summer.”
I started to make my way towards my car as I continued to hold the phone to my ear listening to Dr. House. “Doctor, you’re not making any sense. What made you discharge her?”
“In laymen’s terms detective, Summer was always the “evil” twin. Autumn was the “good” twin, but she made Autumn turn into this wild, thriving, flirty person when she created her due to her split personality. We discharged her for a trial run to live life normally. She was to come back for evaluation every 3 months until fully discharged. She did that for a year. After that, we never heard from her.”
“And you let her just run free all this time?” I asked as I opened my car door.
“Our records of her were mistakenly filled out that she was discharged freely. The nurses must have gotten it wrong or something –“
“Big mistake doctor. Thank you for your time.” I quickly ended the call as I quickly put my car into drive. I called police headquarters to let them know where I was heading, “Im on my way to N.Y.U. Tell any officers who may already be there or at Berkly to wait on my command!”

(Joe)
N.Y.U College Campus
Everything Selena told me was right about Summer. Summer was bipolar and pretended to be her twin sister Autumn at times. Everything we had learned in class about a person with mental illness was right. Everything pointed at Summer. She was falling to pieces right before my eyes.
“It was an accident.” Summer said thru her tears as her lips quivered. “No…it wasn’t an accident, Summer. Remember? You killed Autumn.” Arianna said defensively.
Summer shook her head no repeatedly. “No, I didn't! You all abandoned us! You put us away!” Summer cried out in anger.
Arianna started to walk up close to Summer.
“Stop! Don’t you dare come any closer!” Summer quickly reached into the car’s glove department and pulled out a gun aiming it at Arianna.
Arianna stopped dead in her tracks raising her hands up to her mouth in shock.
"Whoa! Summer! Baby, what are you doing?!” I cried out in shock.
"Leave me alone!” Summer shouted as she slung her purse over her shoulder.
When she slung her purse over her shoulder some things fell out of her purse. It was a pair of black framed eye glasses. Selena crept up slowly to pick them up. She held them up in her hands. “Summer, is this like your mask to be Autumn?”
Summer now aimed the gun at Selena. “Give them back to me.” She said angrily thru her teeth.
“Summer, we just want to help you.” Selena said calmly.
“Give them back to me, BITCH!” Summer took the safety off of the gun ready to shoot.
“Summer, just stop it!” Arianna shouted thru her tears.
“NO YOU STOP IT! YOU AND YOUR FAMILY NEVER LOVED US! NEVER!” Summer shouted at the top of her lungs.
Within the next second, Summer pulled the trigger and shot Arianna making her fall backwards to the ground.
My eyes widened in shock as I watched Arianna fall back to the ground. I could hear Selena’s scream in the background. I looked up at Summer in shock and fear. Summer’s eyes drifted back to Selena.
“Give me the glasses bitch!” Summer said thru her teeth.
With the gun now aimed at Selena, Summer pulled the trigger.
“NO!” I shouted.
Everything seemed to be happening in slow motion as Selena’s hair swung across her face, falling to the ground with the force of the bullet. The eye glasses she held in her hand dropped freely to the ground. I started to run toward Selena when I heard Summer call out to me in anger.
“JOE! STOP!”
I ignored Summer and continued to make my way to Selena. I dropped to ground and saw that Selena was shot in the shoulder. She was barely awake. “Sel…hold on.” I said softly trying to cradle her in my arms.
I could see Summer pick up the glasses from the ground at the corner of my eye.
“Get up! Get up, NOW!” I heard her say angrily to me as she pointed the gun at the back of my head.
I looked up at her and she was now wearing the black framed eye glasses.
“Do you see what you have made me done!? Do you see this, Summer!!??” she shouted out loud. She then lowered her voice and said to me, “Get up now, or I will shoot you dead.”
I could hear a walkie-talkie in the far distance say, “Shot’s fired! Shots fired! Lock down the campus!”
The campus security were on their way due to the sounds of gunshots ringing out in the parking lot.
“Let’s go loverboy.” she said.
I stood up slowly as I kept my eyes on Summer.
She then said with a smirk on her face, “Don’t try anything funny. Summer wouldn’t want me to hurt her little boyfriend. You drive.”
